The Facts

  • The U.S. Federal Election Commission has temporarily taken its web-facing services offline in response to an attempt to breach its systems, according to an email reviewed by Reuters on Tuesday.
  • A status notice from the FEC indicated that its filing system went offline at roughly 10 p.m. ET on Monday. In a statement, the FEC said: "at this time, the FEC’s electronic filing system is currently offline and our IT staff are actively working to restore service."
  • The FEC, which tracks candidate and political committee spending, has no role in administering U.S. elections and the outage should not affect voting. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the FBI have not yet responded to requests for comment.
