Version 7.18.3
Mocking a politician's outfit is about as basic a democratic right as it gets, and no elected official should be able to dial up the police over getting his feelings hurt. Invoking hate-speech provisions to justify removing a 15-year-old from his bed and detaining him over Facebook jokes represents a serious abuse of state power. This is the work of a police state, and no redefined "hate speech" code changes that.
Abuse aimed at elected representatives and sexual minorities has become a daily threat across the U.K., and brushing off harassment as harmless banter is how hostility escalates into threats and eventually violence. Ignoring hate-motivated incidents until the law is clearly broken means warning signs get missed until somebody gets hurt. Public service should never come with a price tag of fear.
