Rifle-Armed Police Hit Sydney Streets in Australian First
The Facts
- New South Wales (NSW) Police launched the Armed Response Command (ARC) on Sunday, with officers carrying military-style rifles on patrols of Sydney's tourist areas, public spaces, sporting venues and places of worship in a first for Australia.
- Initially funded by an AU$94.3 million ($66.2 million) investment from the NSW government, the command will ultimately expand to include 250 officers and 28 civilian staff, supported by a 24-hour operations center. Officers selected for ARC have undergone six months of "intensive, specialist training."
- ARC officers will also use locally produced Australian Combat Assault Rifles, a weapon system Lithgow Arms developed in partnership with Wedgetail Industries. The rifles were previously reserved mainly for tactical operations.
