Version 7.18.3
Shutting the door on outside inspectors is the move of a government with something ugly to hide. Independent eyes on cells, colonies and psychiatric wards are the only thing standing between detainees and abuse that never gets reported. Walking away from an anti-torture pact while torture allegations pile up says everything about the priorities at play.
A monitoring pact only works when every member gets a seat at the table, and being frozen out while still being judged is a farce. Mutual oversight became a one-way inspection regime once they denied representation, so keeping the pact alive served no purpose. National law and courts can enforce protection from abuse without a club that refuses equal standing.
