Serbia's Students Demand Police, Spy, Court Chiefs Resign

Is this a long-overdue purge of a captured state or a foreign-backed push to topple legitimate government?

The Facts

  • Serbia's student movement demanded Thursday that top officials in the police, intelligence agencies and the judiciary resign, with student Filip Ubovic saying the group did not come for revenge but to return institutions to the citizens.
  • Student List representatives called for the immediate resignation of Security Information Agency director Vladimir Orlic — saying the agency had served a party rather than the state — and of Constitutional Court President Vladan Petrov.
  • The movement asked prosecutors to reopen cases including the 2024 Novi Sad canopy collapse and the 2018 killing of Kosovo Serb politician Oliver Ivanovic, and sought audits of state spending on Expo 2027 and the Belgrade Waterfront project.

The Spin

Narrative A

Security services, prosecutors and courts that take orders from a party have stopped serving the public. Clearing out the officials who spent years shielding the powerful is the only way the canopy collapse and other buried cases will ever get an honest hearing. Auditing the megaprojects is the bare minimum after a landslide vote for change.

Narrative B

A movement built on media platforms funded and launched by former U.S. intelligence and diplomatic figures looks a lot less homegrown than advertised. Governments get replaced at the ballot box, not by street pressure that purges officials one by one. Trading balanced foreign policy and old ties to Moscow for whatever Brussels demands is a bad deal.
