A cyberattack on supermarket refrigeration systems has turned perfectly usable food into mountains of waste, with frozen pizzas, ice cream and other perishables dumped across Europe. One Belgian store alone estimated losses of more than €100,000. Beyond the financial hit to retailers, the incident highlights how an attack on basic store infrastructure can disrupt food supplies and create substantial waste.
One hack might be a fluke, but another across Europe after October's attack in France is a warning that connected refrigeration has been left wide open. Weak authentication and unpatchable legacy units amount to an open invitation, and the next target could be hospitals or military supply chains instead of frozen pizza. Food security deserves the same seriousness as power grids and banking.
