The Facts

  • Tiger Woods said he's "stepping away" from golf to seek treatment on Tuesday after he was charged with driving under the influence (DUI) and other offenses following a rollover crash involving another vehicle near his home in Florida last week.
  • "I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today," Woods said in a statement posted on X. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery."
  • The statement came shortly after court records released earlier in the day showed that Woods pleaded not guilty to DUI charges.

The Spin

Narrative A

The résumé that Woods possesses is about as good as it can get for a professional golfer. But the latest off-course incident, following a string of similar instances over the years, is now raising serious questions about his legacy. It is irresponsible for someone in his position to be placing himself in these kinds of situations.

Narrative B

While it's good for Woods that he's stepping away and concentrating on his health, as that's exactly what he needs, it raises questions about where it leaves the sport of golf. For decades, it has relied on his stardom to generate profits and ratings. However, it's probably time to recognize that Woods is no longer capable of that role and that the sport has to move in a new direction.
