Version 7.18.3
No outlet holds a constitutional right to camp out steps from the Oval Office, and proximity is a courtesy that can be rescinded when coverage is built on fabrication. A working press can file stories just fine from a roomier spot instead of a cramped basement in the West Wing. Access that close to the president is earned by honest reporting, not owed by tradition.
Keeping reporters at arms length from the Oval Office is one of the few guarantees that power gets questioned in real time, and an eviction would just punish unflattering coverage. Stripping credentials, yanking pool seats and floating evictions all point in the same direction: a president picking which journalists get to work. A free press shouldn't depend on flattering the man in charge.
