Trump Urges New Mexico to Rename Itself 'New America'

The Facts
- U.S. President Donald Trump called on Monday for New Mexico to rename itself "New America," writing on Truth Social, "We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!" He posted shortly before leaving the White House for a rally in Kansas.
- Trump added that the change would add "great value and prestige" to the state and that home values and incomes would rise. He also wrote that "Crooked Elections" would "become honest again." He, however, offered no evidence for either claim in the post.
- Trump does not have the power to rename a state, and any change would have to originate in New Mexico, where Article I of the state constitution states, "The name of this state is New Mexico." Congressional action could also be required.

Pro-Trump narrative
A state in the United States should carry a name that reflects the country it belongs to, not one that nods to another nation. New America has a nice ring to it, and the rebrand would add prestige while lifting home values and incomes. A proud new name could even nudge a state known for crooked elections back toward honest ones.
Anti-Trump narrative
New Mexico's name goes back centuries, long before the United States existed, and generations of culture are nothing to apologize for. No president gets to rename a state — that call belongs to New Mexicans and to the state constitution. The whole stunt just distracts from real policy failures.
