Teen lives should not be the price of engagement-driven feeds. Algorithms that shovel suicide and self-harm clips at vulnerable children are a design choice, and a regulator content with lackluster codes is failing the children it is meant to protect. Stronger online safety law with real teeth is the bare minimum owed to grieving families.
TikTok has taken extensive action to protect children and teenagers on the platform. Protections like minimum age limits, stricter default privacy settings for teens and content filters already help young users avoid adult subjects. In the case of suicide and self-harm content, TikTok's stance could not be stronger, with a total ban on the material.
