The Facts

  • A study by researchers from Imperial College London, the Met Office and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine estimated that more than 2,700 people died from heat-related causes during heatwaves in England and Wales in May and June 2026.
  • Of the estimated 2,700 heat-related deaths, approximately 42% were attributed to the extra heat caused by human-induced climate change. Around 550 people died during the May heatwave (May 21-29) and about 2,200 during the June heatwave (June 18-28).
  • Researchers found that maximum daytime temperatures across England and Wales are now roughly 3-4℃ hotter than they would have been without human-induced climate change. The May national record was broken at 35.1℃ in west London, while June temperatures exceeded 37℃ in East Anglia.

The Spin

Narrative A

Fossil fuel burning is supercharging heat waves that have already killed thousands this summer. Rapid emissions cuts are required to prevent even deadlier extremes ahead, while serious upgrades to protect homes and health care facilities must start immediately, especially the introduction of air conditioning.

Narrative B

Air conditioning isn't the answer. While we must mitigate the effects of heatwaves on human health, AC is a major contributor to the root cause of the problem, with older models of AC leaking chemicals damaging to the planet and accelerating the effects of climate change. A more holistic approach and sustainable solutions to the health effect of heatwaves is needed.
