UK to Free Thousands of Prisoners Early from September

- Justice Secretary David Lammy is set to implement legal changes from September that will allow prisoners convicted of manslaughter, rape, GBH and sex offenses to be released halfway through their sentences, rather than at the current two-thirds point.
- The Ministry of Justice expects between 5,000 and 7,000 prisoners will be released early in total, with the first 700 offenders due to be freed in September, followed by similar numbers each month over the following nine months.
- Under the reforms, prisoners convicted of burglary, theft, assault and repeated shoplifting will be eligible for release after serving as little as one-third of their sentence, down from the current 40 percent threshold.
