UK to Spend £100M Backing World-First AI Biosecurity Lab

The U.K. government announced on Saturday that it will establish an AI Biosecurity Lab, committing £100 million to what officials describe as the world's first dedicated AI biosecurity organization, with further details due in next week's Budget.

Ministers also pledged £65 million to develop countermeasures against pathogens and £130 million to use AI in spotting cyber vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure, within an overall AI spending package reported at about £600 million.

Backing homegrown scientific talent and sovereign AI capability means safety and prosperity no longer depend on decisions made overseas. Spending now on detection and defense costs far less than cleaning up after a crisis.

Handing public money to the very firms racing to build ever more powerful models is a strange way to guard against the dangers those models create. Payment in model credits deepens dependence on a handful of firms instead of buying independent capability. And the biologists and genomics experts who actually do this work will be sidelined.
