The Facts

  • A federal grand jury indictment unsealed Thursday charged Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas and six others with eight counts, including racketeering conspiracy, marijuana distribution, money laundering and bribery. Lucas faces five of the counts.
  • The indictment names six co-defendants, including Lucas' daughters Lisa Lucas-Burke and Theresa Lucas-Lamb, and her grandson Ryan Eichelberger. Prosecutors allege that the group acquired and distributed 100 kilograms or more of marijuana.
  • Lucas, 82, surrendered to law enforcement Thursday morning and said in a post on X that the federal government had been "wielded against" her. Her initial court appearance was set for Thursday afternoon in Norfolk.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

Dropping an indictment on a sitting lawmaker 12 days before an election tramples a longstanding DOJ norm. And targeting the architect of Virginia's redistricting push just as voters head to the polls looks like political payback rather than blind justice. Presumption of innocence still means something, even when the headlines scream otherwise.

Republican narrative

It seems that justice has finally caught up to Lucas, who was using her seat of power to shield an alleged drug operation — corruption of the worst kind. Democrats' claims that this is a political hit fall apart when the investigation started during the Biden administration and Lucas isn't running for anything. Virginians deserve accountability.
