Version 7.18.3
Sovereignty took a real hit when foreign money, friendly media and anti-Trump operatives in Washington and Brussels got to help pick Serbia's next government. The tell comes next: if sanctions on Russia swiftly follow, as they likely will, whatever voters were promised, that’s the proof. Outside pressure wearing a democratic mask is still outside pressure.
Two years of students in the streets, not Brussels, decided this election, and pretending otherwise insults every Serbian who showed up to vote. Moscow poured in operatives, influencers and cheap gas for a decade and still lost, which says plenty about how thin that influence always was. Losing a reliable middleman in the Balkans stings, and it should.
While the Student List movement has dealt a major blow to Vučić's 12-year dominance in Serbian politics, the road ahead remains fraught with challenges. Forming a functioning government, dismantling entrenched political networks and securing control of state institutions will test the movement's unity and resolve as it seeks to turn electoral gains into lasting political change.
