The Houthis picked this fight, raining missiles and drones on Mokha's port, shutting it down and killing workers. Now the Iran-backed and Russia-supported group has pushed toward Bab al-Mandab, threatening global shipping, while the death toll has passed 300 and roughly 1,800 families have fled. Government forces are right to push back; Yemen cannot have peace while a foreign-backed armed movement can seize territory and threaten global shipping with impunity.

Establishment-critical narrative

Yemen has endured 12 years of a Saudi-led campaign backed by the United States, while Sanaa's airspace remains restricted and Riyadh opens its skies to Israeli flights. Answering a blockade with pressure on a vital maritime corridor is justified self-defense, and the Red Sea gives Yemenis leverage they otherwise lack. Years of bombing, isolation and relentless economic pressure cannot continue indefinitely without provoking a forceful response.
