Hichilema's landslide re-election is a clear mandate from Zambians who credit him with pulling the country out of a debt crisis, restoring investor confidence and bringing 2.3 million kids back into classrooms. The opposition's fraud claims came without evidence, and regional and international observers confirmed election day was largely peaceful. Zambia's democratic tradition held firm, and voters delivered an unmistakable verdict.
Hichilema's re-election win is tainted by a campaign season marked by opposition intimidation, arrests of political rivals and state media that heavily favored the ruling party. E.U. observers flagged an uneven playing field, suspended vote counting and late legal changes that distorted the race before a ballot was cast. A result this lopsided, delivered under such troubling conditions, deserves serious scrutiny rather than celebration.
