Russian Anti-War Activist Dies Following 'Fall'

The Facts

  • Russian anti-war activist Olga Nazarenko has died in hospital two weeks after suffering a "fall from a height." Although the incident had been described as an accident, some online alleged that her opponents were responsible for her death.

  • Despite repeatedly being detained by authorities, Nazarenko continued carrying out weekly protests that caused her to lose her position as an associate professor. She also appeared in a number of media reports and videos opposing the Kremlin.

The Spin

Pro-Ukraine narrative

Russia's failed assault on Avdiivka shows how hard it is for Russian forces to shift the frontline. Though Putin wants to throw his reserves into costly operations around Ukraine's eastern cities, Moscow will suffer heavy losses as entrenched Ukrainian forces continue to hold back the Russian advance.

Pro-Russia narrative

The Ukrainian counteroffensive was doomed to fail from the start. It's clear Kyiv is bound to lose the war as Ukrainian troops have suffered enormous casualties. With an air offensive, Russia will exert more pressure on Kyiv, which explains why the West is now rushing more weapons to the battlefield.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that there will be a bilateral ceasefire or peace agreement in the Russo-Ukraine conflict by December 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

China to Replace Defense Minister Not Seen in 2 Months

The Facts

  • It has been announced that China's Defense Minister Gen. Li Shangfu will be replaced. Li was appointed by President Xi Jinping in March, but has not been seen in public since he addressed the China-Africa Peace and Security Forum in Beijing on Aug. 29.

  • Li's ousting, which was revealed at the end of a meeting of the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress, follows the dismissal of Foreign Minister Qin Gang in July, who was relieved amid speculation about a potentially compromising affair during his time as a US ambassador.

The Spin

Anti-China narrative

Though it's not uncommon for officials to be removed for corruption, particularly from within the capital-intensive Rocket Force, Pres. Xi's latest dismissals point less to a crackdown on corruption and more to a series of miscalculated appointments. Xi spent his first seven years in control consolidating power, and it looks like he is still prioritizing personal authority over displaying military strength toward the US. The CCP will continue to be led by Xi for the foreseeable future, but it won't be declaring war any time soon.

Pro-China narrative

Minister Li's decorated military career is, unfortunately, the reason for his dismissal. Having risen the ranks from director of China's main satellite launch sites in Xichang to head of the Equipment Development Department of the Central Military Commission before becoming Defense Minister, he was eventually placed under sanctions by then US Pres. Donald Trump due to his involvement in the development program. This caused trouble for the CCP, which is why it was necessary to relieve him of his duties.

Nerd narrative

There's a 7% chance that there will be active warfare between the United States and China before 2027, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Spain's Socialists Reach Coalition Deal with Far-Left

The Facts

  • A day after Socialist Party leader and Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met far-left Sumar party chief and acting Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz, the two parties announced they had reached a "governing deal for a four-year legislative term" on Tuesday.

  • In a joint statement, the partners said their coalition government will focus on improving Spain through "quality employment, developing policies based on social and climate justice while broadening rights, feminist conquests, and freedoms."

The Spin

Left narrative

Spain's left is taking the necessary steps to form a strong government and prevent the far-right from taking over the country. The Socialist Party was on its deathbed following July's election, but has seen a resurgence after the People's Party couldn't form a majority. With the help of the progressive Sumar party, Sanchez's Socialists can retake power and remake the state's democratic institutions.

Right narrative

Spain's acting government is trying to cling onto power by pledging to completely transform the country's laws and undermine Spanish sovereignty. The Socialists care about nothing except their own power and are willing to bend the knee to traitors and secessionists to get votes. Sanchez should think about more than himself when trying to form a government.

Nerd narrative

There's a 41% chance that Spain will announce a snap general election before March 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Blinken Warns Iran Against Attacks on US Troops

The Facts

  • Secretary of State Antony Blinken has warned that while Washington doesn't seek conflict with Iran, it will not hesitate to respond in the event of attacks on US troops in the Middle East.

  • Addressing the UN Security Council on Tuesday, Blinken warned Tehran that the US would defend itself "swiftly and decisively" should "Iran or its proxies attack US personnel anywhere."

The Spin

Pro-Iran narrative

Blinken's address to the UN Security Council was a blatant attempt to put the blame for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on Iran. In reality, it's the US that continues to fuel the war by openly siding with the Israeli regime in its campaign of collective punishment against the people of Gaza. Should the war expand regionally due to US complicity in Israel's atrocities, the international community will know who is responsible. Tehran will continue to stand with the Palestinians, supporting their desire to e

Anti-Iran narrative

Blinken has rightly warned Tehran against further attacks by its proxies on US military personnel. While the Iranian regime avoids direct military confrontation with the US or Israel, it relies on its proxies to carry out attacks on US troops. These actions aim to further expand Tehran's regional clout at the expense of US influence. However, Iran is mistaken if it thinks that Washington will stand idly by as it continues to facilitate attacks by its proxies on US troops.

Nerd narrative

There's a 39% chance that before 2024, the US government will state that Iran likely helped Hamas plan the Oct. 7 attack on Israel, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

NHL Reverses Ban on Colored Stick Tape

The Facts

  • The National Hockey League (NHL) announced Tuesday that it has reversed its previous ban on using stick tape to express support for social causes, including LGBTQ+ issues. Players “now have the option to voluntarily represent social causes with their stick tape throughout the season.”

  • The previous policy, issued in June, forbade teams from wearing “specialty” jerseys during warmups, practices, or games during nights that supported causes, including Pride and military appreciation.

The Spin

Left narrative

The NHL should be applauded not just for allowing freedom of expression but for breaking the age-old stigma around LGBTQ+ issues in society. Players shouldn't have to risk their careers for simply using rainbow tape — thankfully, the league has come to its senses and put itself on the right side of history.

Right narrative

While the left attempts to portray this issue as the NHL imposing widespread censorship on its players, the truth is that the league has been caving to a minuscule group of activists. The league should keep politics and its extreme left causes out of sports. If its fanbase is anything like the NFL’s, the NHL should be ready for a backlash in response to its virtue signaling.

Israel Demands Resignation of UN Chief Amid Row Over Palestine Remarks

The Facts

  • Israeli officials demanded the resignation of UN Secretary Gen. António Guterres following remarks the UN chief made at a UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday.

  • Guterres said Israel's bombardment and blockade of the territory amounted to the "collective punishment of the Palestinian people" and violated international law. This came on a day when 700 people were reportedly killed in Israel's bombing of Gaza, and amid reports that Gaza's hospitals have begun to shut down due to lack of fuel.

The Spin

Pro-Israel narrative

Guterres' comments are shocking and unacceptable. Those who show sympathy for those who committed a campaign of terror and mass murder against Israeli civilians are unfit to lead the UN. Guterres should resign immediately.

Pro-Palestine narrative

Guterres' comments came after Israeli air strikes killed another 700 civilians and as aid officials continued to warn of a humanitarian cataclysm. He is right to say that what Israel is doing to Gaza is a collective punishment for Palestinians as a whole. This is a severe violation of international law, and Guterres should not have to vacate his post.

Nerd narrative

There's a 31% chance that Israel will launch a large-scale ground offensive into Gaza before Nov. 1, 2023, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Biden Meets With Australia's Albanese

The Facts

  • US Pres. Joe Biden welcomed Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to the White House on Wednesday, with nearly 4K spectators present for the official arrival ceremony.

  • The state visit — the fourth since Biden became president — involved a pavilion dinner on the South Lawn of the White House, as well as a press conference in the Rose Garden.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

The attempt by Biden to strengthen his ties in the Pacific has certainly been undermined by conflict in the Middle East as well as troubles within domestic Congressional politics. However, with the need to contain the reach of China's influence always a priority, the hosting of a state dinner for Australia and Albanese highlights the extremely delicate and complicated list of foreign policy matters that the Biden administration continues to navigate through.

Establishment-critical narrative

At the top of Biden's agenda with Albanese must be the revitalization of AUKUS. So far, despite positive rhetoric, the goals outlined in the deal have stalled, as the US drags its feet over export control provisions that currently prohibit nuclear submarines from being sold to Australia — a key agreement between the two countries two years ago. The purpose of AUKUS is to deter China's growing hegemony, a mission that is in danger of failing unless Albanese and Biden get their act together.

Pro-China narrative

While the AUKUS allies pretend that their military buildup is about peace and stability, in reality, this deal sets off a destabilizing and unnecessary arms race that will further provoke China. This unjustifiable move reflects a cold war and colonial mindset in which the Anglophone powers believe they have a natural right to dominate the region. By investing hundreds of billions, Australia is not only making itself an agent of US hegemonic interests but also risks gambling away its own political and economic future.

Meta Sued by US States Over Mental Health Claims

The Facts

  • Thirty-three US states have filed a lawsuit in federal court in California against Meta over accusations the company has designed Facebook and Instagram features to "ultimately ensnare youth and teens" in pursuit of maximizing profit.

  • The total number of states suing Meta rises to 41 plus Washington, DC when adding in nine attorneys general who are filing lawsuits in their states.

The Spin

Narrative A

Meta's deception in light of its own research showing the addictive nature of its platforms for youth is reminiscent of Big Tobacco’s assault on public health and its harmful lying when faced with litigation in the '90s. Like the tobacco companies, hopefully, Meta will be forced to pay restitution and develop ways to make their products safer.

Narrative B

There have been mixed results in past lawsuits against Meta and other Big Tech firms. In the meantime, parents should be taking the initiative — speaking with their children about how social media makes them feel, limiting their screen time, and doing their best to monitor the type of content their kids are consuming. The tech giant has internal controls but parenting is and should always be the first line of defense.

Louisiana Republican Mike Johnson Elected House Speaker

The Facts

  • Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) was elected as the 56th House speaker on Wednesday with the unanimous support of House Republicans, the first show of unity from the GOP since the ouster of Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) three weeks ago.

  • Johnson defeated Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) in the first House floor ballot held on the day, 220-209, securing the simple majority threshold required to win the gavel after three other Republican nominees — Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.), Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) — failed to do so.

The Spin

Republican narrative

A hard-working principled conservative who is admired across the Republican Party, Mike Johnson will certainly do a great job for the nation as House speaker — as he has already done on the Judiciary Committee and on the House Republican Conference. His leadership and honesty will help get the country back on track for the benefit of American families.

Democratic narrative

The newly elected Speaker Johnson is a leading election denier who, as chairman of the House Republican Conference, played a key role in congressional efforts to subvert the 2020 presidential election as well as one of the most hardline conservatives in the House. That the GOP has only been able to rally around such a figure is worrisome, yet not surprising.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that Republicans will win control of the US House of Representatives in 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

US Immigration: Texas Sues the Biden Admin. Over Razor Wire Cutting

The Facts

  • Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing the Biden administration in an effort to stop federal agents from cutting the state’s concertina razor wire that acts as a barrier at the Rio Grande on the US-Mexico border.

  • The lawsuit alleges that the Biden administration is "undermining" Texas’ efforts to enforce its own border security. In a news release, the Republican attorney general stated that "Texas has the sovereign right to construct border barriers to prevent the entry of illegal aliens."

The Spin

Republican narrative

While America’s southern border is being invaded by hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens every month, the Biden administration is more concerned with tearing down border security efforts and helping migrants sneak across the Rio Grande. Texas, however, has strong leadership that cares about state sovereignty and safety. State and federal governments not only have the right but also the duty, to implement any mechanism necessary to stop the invasion at the Southern Border, regardless of Joe Biden’s open borders agenda.

Democratic narrative

Texas’ razor wire border isn’t about security, it's a political stunt aimed at inflicting the most suffering on migrants. Texas’ policy is ineffective, and it has caused inhumane lacerations and injuries to migrants trying to seek a better life in the US. The cruelty of Republicans knows no bounds, and federal agents have every right to cut down these barbaric fences that harm women and children — especially when medical emergencies are involved.
