Netanyahu: FlyDubai Co-Pilot Had 'Islamist Radical Indoctrination'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that the co-pilot who stabbed the captain of a FlyDubai flight to Tel Aviv had undergone "Islamist radical indoctrination" and was suicidal, adding it looked "very likely" he intended to bring down the plane.
"We know that he underwent Islamist radical indoctrination. That appears to be something we are gathering from his personal information," Netanyahu said in an interview with Fox News, adding, "But again, I don't make final conclusions yet. But that's the indications we have now."
U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday that, "based on what he was hearing," the co-pilot was linked to Iran, going further than Netanyahu, who told Fox News it was "too early to say" whether Tehran was involved.
Pro-Israel narrative
An ideology that treats every Jew, Christian and nonbeliever as a legitimate target is the real story here and pretending otherwise invites the next attempt. Ordinary passengers had to stop what layers of security never caught, which says everything about how badly this danger gets downplayed. Naming the radicalism behind it is the bare minimum for stopping it.
Pro-Iran narrative
A conveniently timed midair drama, staged right after secret talks with Gulf officials, smells like a setup built for an election season and an escalation agenda. The goal is to pin blame on Iran and drag Washington into another costly war paid for with American weapons and credibility. Regional states would be wise to see who actually benefits from this script.
Establishment-critical narrative
The FlyDubai incident raises serious questions the absence of cabin crew and oxygen masks, the cockpit being unlocked by the stabbed pilot, passenger movement in a nose-diving plane, and no injuries to others. None of these questions proves anything on its own. But given the circumstances, they deserve clear answers from a full, transparent and independent investigation.
Pro-establishment narrative
Before crying conspiracy surrounding the FlyDubai incident, it's essential to understand how aircraft actually work. A cockpit door can be released from inside, oxygen masks deploy only after cabin pressure drops and a steep descent isn't necessarily vertical. Before calling an incident fake, naysayers must examine the aviation facts.
Ethiopia, Eritrea Cut Diplomatic Ties as Tensions Escalate

Eritrea severed all diplomatic ties with Ethiopia on Thursday, hours after Addis Ababa shut its embassy in Asmara and declared 10 Eritrean diplomats persona non grata, giving them 48 hours to leave over alleged threats to national security.
Meanwhile, Egypt declared a counselor at the Ethiopian Embassy in Cairo persona non grata and gave him 48 hours to leave, the state news agency MENA reported Thursday, after Ethiopia expelled an employee of the Egyptian Embassy in Addis Ababa.
Ethiopian military chief Birhanu Jula accused Eritrea of providing financial support to the Tigray People's Liberation Front, while Doctors Without Borders reported that patient numbers at the Korem and Alamata hospitals had risen from about 180 to more than 420 in 48 hours.
Pro-government narrative
Expelling diplomats caught undermining a sovereign state is legitimate self-defense. A neighbor that arms and shelters rebel coalitions, then plays innocent, forfeits any claim to normal diplomatic relations. No government can reasonably be expected to tolerate foreign support for forces seeking to destabilize it. Dialogue and African Union mediation remain open, but subversion disguised as diplomacy deserves the firm response it received.
Government-critical narrative
Blaming foreign embassies is a convenient way to dodge responsibility for broken promises at home. A peace deal left half-implemented, with self-rule and political representation still denied and troops never fully withdrawn, is what ultimately pushed seven armed groups into a single alliance. Slamming diplomatic doors shut rather than addressing those grievances only raises the risk that fighting will spread further across the Horn.
Nerd narrative
There is a 35% chance that state-based conflict between Egypt and Ethiopia will cause at least 1,000 deaths in a single year before 2070, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
400 French Schools Shut Down as Violent Student Protests Continue

More than 400 French schools and other educational establishments remained closed Friday as students continued protesting and rioting over issues including teacher and supplies shortages and poor school infrastructure.
The interior ministry said police and gendarmes made 1,949 arrests Thursday and that 305 officers were injured. As of Friday, Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said 2,000 had been arrested, with a reported 400 officers and more than 230 school employees injured.
Interior ministry figures show that the movement affected 1,027 of France's 3,700 high schools. Students also blocked access to about 30 university campuses on Thursday, including in Paris and Marseille.
Government-critical narrative
Crumbling classrooms, absent teachers and endless budget cuts have finally pushed students past the breaking point, so nobody can pretend this anger is spontaneous. Austerity imposed from the top always lands on the youngest and most powerless. A government that can't provide adequate educational facilities has no business lecturing anyone about discipline.
Pro-government narrative
Torching buildings and injuring dozens of school staff members has nothing to do with defending public education. The safety of students and the adults who teach them outweighs any slogan, and keeping campuses open while arson spreads would be reckless. Remote classes will keep learning going until the violence stops.
Christa Pike Condition 'Critical' After Surviving Two Lethal Injections

Christa Pike — the Tennessee death row inmate who survived two lethal injections on Wednesday — is critically ill and is receiving life-saving medical care in a Nashville hospital, her lawyers said on Thursday.
"Christa is alive right now," lawyer Randy Spivey, of the Tennessee Post-Conviction Defender's Office, told reporters in an online call. "We don’t have a sense of her prognosis or much update on her health at the moment, but we do know that she is alive right now."
"She is in critical condition receiving life-saving care," he added. "That is the extent of what we have at the moment."
Establishment-critical narrative
This botched execution was not only ineffective, cruel and tortuous, but also entirely predictable. Lawyers for Pike warned of conditions that were going to make agonizing complications likely and state officials simply dismissed them and went ahead anyway.
Pro-establishment narrative
The details of this case are deeply disturbing and the people of Tennessee deserve an answer as to what transpired. That's why an independent third-party review has been ordered, but beyond that, it is too early to state what took place.
Nerd narrative
There's a 50% chance that capital punishment will be legal in at least 38.8% of U.S. states in 2035, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
UK-Iran National Arrested in RAF Fairford Investigation

Counter-terrorism police arrested a 25-year-old dual U.K.-Iranian national in Westminster, London, on Thursday on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006, in connection with the RAF Fairford incident.
Police said two properties in the same London area were searched. The force initially gave the man's age as 27 and said a second man, 26, had been questioned under caution, then corrected both details.
This comes after Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Wednesday there were "strong indications" that Iran played a part in the incident, while noting police investigations remain ongoing.
Pro-establishment narrative
Hostile states hiring local amateurs to hit Western targets is yet another example of Iran's use of proxies to engage in sustained hybrid warfare against the West. A base launching bombers over Iran was openly named as a target, and drone incidents at military sites keep climbing. Tehran should not believe that it will be allowed to get away with such obvious and open aggression.
Pro-Iran narrative
Pinning this on Tehran is lazy scapegoating that falls apart against the evidence. All of the suspects are British nationals, yet the political class reaches for a foreign villain to dodge harder questions and whip up Iranophobia. Hosting American bombers aimed at Iranian civilians is the real provocation here, not some imagined plot.
Nerd narrative
There's a 5% chance that Iran will possess a nuclear weapon before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Letitia James Appointed Special Prosecutor in Cornell Rape Allegations

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul appointed state Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor to investigate allegations of gang rape at a Cornell University fraternity in 2024 on Thursday. On Friday, Hochul stated that the accuser had been "failed" at "every turn."
The woman, identified as Jane Doe in court papers, sued Cornell, seven Chi Phi fraternity members and other defendants this month, alleging she was plied with drugs and alcohol and assaulted at the fraternity house in October 2024. No one was criminally charged.
On Thursday, transcripts obtained by the media indicate that Doe stated she had "100% confidence I was raped," among other remarks, in her November 2024 interview with campus police. This was omitted from the condensed sworn statement that the district attorney based his decision not to pursue charges on.
Left narrative
A young woman reports being passed around while incapacitated, and the system failed her beyond measure. Snapchat messages advertising a drugged woman as free access show a culture that treats female bodies as property, and a narrow rape statute shouldn't be a permission slip. Accountability means independent investigations, real consequences and prevention that actually works.
Right narrative
This accusation is not a conviction, and incidents like the Duke lacrosse fiasco proved what happens when outrage outruns evidence. The accused should be considered innocent until proven guilty, and a careful process matters. A governor insinuating guilt and handing the case to a hyperpolitical ally who already prejudged it poisons any claim of impartiality.
Australia Finds Child Safety Gaps in Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft, Steam

Australia's eSafety Commissioner published a report on Friday, finding "significant gaps" in how the companies that own Roblox, Minecraft, Fortnite and Steam protect children, following compulsory information-gathering notices issued to the four providers in April.
The notices required the firms to provide details on how their services met the Australian government's Basic Online Safety Expectations under the Online Safety Act 2021 between Oct. 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026.
Valve, the owner of Steam, came under particular scrutiny, with the report noting that it did not use hash-matching tools — which can identify and remove previously confirmed child sexual exploitation, abuse or violence material without reanalyzing the content — and boasted limited chat protections, apart from an anti-scam URL detection tool.
Industry-critical narrative
Children deserve the same guarantee online that toys on a shelf already carry built-in safety before launch, not patched after a child is groomed or radicalized. Gaming giants have shown that voluntary goodwill produces wildly uneven protection, with some refusing even basic detection tools or intelligence sharing. If this continues, then Australia will apply regulatory muscle until they get their act together.
Pro-industry narrative
Gaming platforms already ban grooming, sextortion, exploitation material and predatory contact with minors, with enforcement ranging from lockouts to bans and referrals to child protection authorities. Detailed rules on payments, trading, random-item odds and age-gated features show self-governance that adapts faster than any regulator's checklist, while player reporting and parental controls keep the system honest.
3 States Ask Supreme Court to Void Abortion Shield Laws

Attorneys general from Louisiana, Alabama and Arkansas filed suit directly with the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) on Wednesday, arguing that abortion shield laws in New York, Massachusetts and California are unconstitutional.
The complaint asks SCOTUS to find the shield laws violate the Full Faith and Credit Clause, the equal sovereignty doctrine, the Dormant Commerce Clause and the federal common law of public nuisance, and seeks an injunction blocking enforcement.
Abortion shield laws are state laws, enacted mostly by Democratic-led states, that protect abortion providers and patients from lawsuits, prosecution and extradition by states with abortion bans.
Republican narrative
After SCOTUS' Dobbs decision, states earned the right to set their own abortion policy. Blue states mailing pills past those borders are nullifying laws passed by voters in red states. Equal sovereignty means no state gets to write the rules for every other one.
Democratic narrative
Shield laws exist to make sure states can set their own abortion policies. Gutting them would let a handful of banned states export their policies nationwide. The real target here was never to assure states' rights, but to find a way to implement a nationwide ban.
Nerd narrative
There's a 3% chance that elective abortion will be banned nationally in the United States before Jan. 1, 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
G7 to Release 100 Million Barrels of Oil, Diesel

G7 leaders agreed Friday to a coordinated release of 100 million barrels of crude oil and refined products through the International Energy Agency (IEA) over four months, including a front-loaded diesel release within the first 20 days.
The agreement followed President Donald Trump's threat to ban U.S. diesel exports unless European countries tapped their reserves. In the joint statement, G7 members pledged to refrain from export restrictions on energy products among themselves.
French President Emmanuel Macron, whose country holds the G7 presidency, chaired the videoconference after speaking with Trump overnight. Trump wrote on Truth Social that Europe had agreed to release a "massive amount" of its diesel stockpiles.
Pro-establishment narrative
Leadership works, and the G7 reserve release proves it. Allies sitting on refined fuel stockpiles while families and truckers get hammered at the pump made no sense, and persistent diplomacy flipped that. Coordinated refinery schedules, frontloaded diesel and zero export restrictions among partners are exactly how a free world answers Iranian aggression and market panic.
Establishment-critical narrative
This whole scramble is damage control for a crisis of Washington's own making. Threatening allies with diesel export bans unless they empty reserves meant for genuine supply emergencies is coercion, not coordination, and Europe's own analysts found no shortage to fix. Burning trust with partners for a pre-election price blip leaves America looking like an unreliable energy supplier.
Study: Half of Testers Thought Tavus' AI Video Caller Was Human

Tavus, a San Francisco-based AI research company, unveiled its system called Griffin on Oct. 1, describing it as the first Human Interaction Model, a full-duplex video-to-video system that sees, hears, speaks and reacts during live face-to-face conversations.
In a company study, 26 of 54 participants, or 48%, believed Griffin-Lite was a real person after a one-minute video call. Tavus' earlier system, combining Phoenix-4.5, Sparrow-2 and Raven-1, convinced 1 of 41 participants, or 2.4%.
Participants were recruited through an independent research platform and told they would be matched with another participant to discuss what they were looking forward to this year. Only at the survey's end were they asked whether they suspected an AI.
Techno-optimist narrative
Whether this passed the Turing test perfectly or not, teaching a machine to read a pause, hold a glance and answer in the same beat a person would is the breakthrough that actually matters. Independent scoring by an outside lab put this system within a hair of human performance and a full point ahead of everything else. Fooling half a room on a live call is the clearest proof yet that face-to-face machine conversation has arrived.
Techno-skeptic narrative
A one-minute chat with 54 people recruited and graded by the company selling the product is not at all close to a Turing-level performance. Nobody was told to look for a machine; there was no human control group and the suspicion rate spiked in the first 20 seconds. On the measures that count — timing, knowing when to speak and nonverbal fit — the gap to an actual person is still wide.
Cynical narrative
There's no good reason to create AI that can fool people into thinking they're talking to a real human. Similar chatbots — which, according to this latest release are less advanced — have already tricked an elderly man into traveling to visit a fake woman and a teenager to commit suicide. With that already happening, the future consequences are endless, from scamming people into providing bank information to kids growing up with AI boyfriends and girlfriends. This entire field of AI should be put to an end.
Nerd narrative
There's a 50% chance that a humanoid robot that the general public judges as indistinguishable from humans will be created by November 2053, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
