Rest is a basic right, and a schedule with one day off a week wrecks health, families and any shot at a decent life. Even Flávio Bolsonaro, who spent months fighting the change, has flipped as polls showed massive popular support for the constitutional amendment. Worker pressure has beaten excuses from employers. Shorter workweeks mean stronger, healthier workers for the benefit of Brazil.
A law cannot conjure free time out of thin air: force the same pay for fewer hours and the cost of each low-wage hire jumps overnight. The predictable result is fewer formal jobs, slammed doors for first-time job seekers and a bigger shove into Brazil's already huge informal economy. Poverty is the real problem, not the calendar, and only productivity growth can fix that.
