Version 7.18.2
Mugging and gesturing behind an opponent all night like Bolsonaro did shows a glaring lack of basic respect for the office being sought. His campaign has been built on manufacturing social media clips instead of answering questions, treating voters as an audience to be farmed rather than citizens to be persuaded. Brazil deserves a serious and experienced statesman, not someone trying to steal the scene.
Steadiness under fire is what separates a president from a candidate, and that balance showed up on stage while Lula came unstuck. A second term has to be justified with a forward-looking case, not a greatest-hits set aimed at people already sold. Independents and first-round abstainers heard nothing new, and that is a win for Bolsonaro.
A debate that swaps proposals for insults is a service to no one, least of all the people trying to decide a presidency. This whole exercise has exposed a broad preference for noise over anything verifiable. To make matters worse, the bottom of the barrel in Brazilian campaign debates apparently still has further left to fall.
