The Facts
- A gunman firing from a car killed one person and wounded five Friday in the Paris suburbs of Trappes and La Verriere, including a 12-year-old girl shot eight times. He reportedly opened fire at sites including a playground and a petrol station.
- France's anti-terrorism prosecutor said Friday evening that the suspect was identified as Kevin T, born in 1987. A Sten submachine gun and a tear gas grenade were found in his car, and the 39-year-old was arrested in nearby Coignieres.
- Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the shootings took place at three separate locations and lasted less than 15 minutes, calling the attack "clearly a terrorist crime." He said the gunman used what appeared to be a military-grade or automatic weapon.

Hate speech never stays rhetorical; it eventually finds someone willing to act, even wanting to "cause a bloodbath" in this case. Firing an automatic weapon at people is barbaric regardless of motive, and the most important response right now is an investigation that establishes why it happened. Fast, cool-headed police work kept the toll from climbing higher and deserves recognition. The judicial sanction should be unrelenting, whatever ideology the evidence ultimately reveals.
