The Facts

  • Google unveiled a suite of new AI-in-education updates and initiatives on Wednesday, as part of the tech company's showcase at the 2026 British Educational Training and Technology (BETT) conference.
  • Included in the announcements was Google's partnership with the Khan Academy to integrate Google Gemini into the latter's Writing Coach tool for grades 7-12 worldwide and in beta for grades 5-6 in the U.S., which guides students through planning, writing and improving essays.
  • Additionally, the Khan Academy will release a new Reading Coach later in the year for students in grades 5-12, which will enable teachers to customize and assign interactive learning experiences based on chosen texts. Google confirmed that this tool will be similarly powered by Gemini.

The Spin

Techno-optimist narrative

Google's latest announcements represent a breakthrough in accessible education. By partnering with the Khan Academy, the University of Oxford and The Princeton Review, the tech giant is developing initiatives that will increase productivity, teach students and provide thoughtful feedback. If used correctly, such AI tools hold the promise of revolutionizing education forever.

Techno-skeptic narrative

As it stands, the risks associated with AI in education far outstrip any benefits, as overreliance on these tools threatens both students' fundamental learning capacity and cognitive development, as well as the credibility of academic institutions and examinations. Tech companies, therefore, must change course before their creations fatally undermine education.
