Version 7.18.2
A democracy that answers peaceful protest with batons, mass detentions and internet blackouts is failing its most basic test of democracy. Blanket bans on gatherings and shutdowns are tools for silencing dissent, and the repeated targeting of young activists shows the direction of suppression. Accountability and an independent probe into these matters are the bare minimum.
Lecturing India about protests while brushing past far rougher crackdowns elsewhere exposes the selective outrage behind these pronouncements. Unpaid volunteers with grand titles carry no authority over a sovereign democracy, its government or its courts. Keeping order on the ground is police work, not a matter for distant bureaucrats.
