Essex County Fire and Rescue Service declared a major incident on Friday after fertilizer stored in one of the industrial units at Highlands Farm, Southend Road, between East Hanningfield and Rettendon, exploded while crews were on scene.

Firefighters were originally alerted to a blaze at 4:50 p.m. local time that threatened both the industrial estate as well as nearby farmland. At its peak, the fire service had mobilized over 100 firefighters to tackle the fire when it caused the stored fertiliser to detonate.

The resulting explosion was reported to have been heard up to 15 miles (24 km) from the scene. Residents as far as Southend, roughly a 30-minute drive away, said they heard the blast, with some claiming that it shook their homes and rattled their windows.

Three fire engines and two fire officer cars were destroyed. In addition, 20 firefighters were taken to the hospital, with four sustaining minor injuries while the remaining 16 underwent precautionary checks, including assessments for hearing loss. All have since been discharged.

In response, the fire service evacuated residents in proximity to the blast zone, closed roads and advised residents and those travelling in the area to keep their windows and doors shut. In the meantime, East of England Ambulance Service deployed its hazardous area response team.

By Saturday evening, the incident was "under control," with the response scaled down to 15 firefighters monitoring hotspots. The U.K. Health Security Agency also advised that the public health risk from the smoke plume and debris was low, though those with asthma were advised to take precautions.
