UK in Talks to Join Canada-Led Defense Bank

The U.K. government said Wednesday that it is in talks about joining the Canada-led Defence, Security and Resilience Bank, with Chancellor John Healey weighing a bid months after his predecessor Rachel Reeves rejected the idea. Officials said no decision has yet been made.

This comes after Prime Minister Andy Burnham had been scheduled to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in the U.K. on Wednesday, including watching an Everton match in Liverpool, but cancelled commitments following the death of his father.

Carney said at the NATO summit in Ankara in July that nine countries had committed to the bank, which aims to raise up to 100 billion pounds in low-cost financing and to become operational in 2027. Its headquarters will be located in Canada.

According to the BBC, joining would cost G7 members about 870 million pounds upfront over three years. The U.K. has committed an initial sum to a separate lender, the Multilateral Defence Mechanism, alongside the Netherlands, Finland and Poland.
