Biden Admin. Moves to Secure Abortion Access For Unaccompanied Migrant Youth

Photo: reuters

The Facts

  • Biden's administration on Thursday issued a directive instructing officials to avoid placing pregnant migrant children — or migrant minors who have suffered from sexual assault — within states that lack abortion access.

  • The guidance, issued by the US Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), also instructed officials to transfer girls who are already being housed to states where abortion remains legal. The ORR is in charge of housing unaccompanied children who lack legal status in America.

The Spin

Left narrative

Polls continuously show that the majority of Americans support abortion and disagree with the Supreme Court's decision to revoke the constitutional liberty. It is ludicrous that politicians are restricting women's bodily autonomy, and the midterms have further demonstrated that Americans want reproductive rights upheld.

Conservative narrative

Abortion is certain to remain legal in many states for the foreseeable future, therefore it is not enough simply to ban the procedure — pro-life supporters must develop efforts to help mothers get through unexpected pregnancies. By giving mothers-to-be more options than parenthood or facing abortionist's knife, US society will start moving away from its fixation on Roe v. Wade.

Nerd narrative

There is a 5% chance that elective abortion will be banned nationally in the US before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Iranian Rockets Hit Kurdish Headquarters in Iraq

The Facts

  • Rockets fired on Monday reportedly killed one and injured 10 when Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted the headquarters of an Iranian Kurdish party in the Iraqi city of Koye, near Erbil, the capital of the autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq.

  • According to Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, the IRGC targeted “terrorist groups” with missiles and drones. Kurdish sources said the IRGC had targeted the Komala Party's base in Sulaimaniya with six drones and the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan's base in Koye with four missiles.

The Spin

Pro-Iran narrative

Rioters linked to foreign enemies are causing the ongoing unrest in Iran. Armed Iranian Kurdish opposition groups operating in neighboring Iraq have infiltrated Kurdish areas of Iran to sow insecurity and catalyze unrest. To meet this threat, the IRGC will continue to strike the main bases of these groups to protect Tehran's national security.

Anti-Iran narrative

Iran is threatening the peace and stability of the region by continuously targeting the positions of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in the autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq. The Iraqi government rightly condemns this crime, which is a direct threat the Baghdad's security and sovereignty.

Turkish Police Arrest 46 Over Istanbul Bombing

Photo: wapo

The Facts

  • Turkish police have reportedly arrested 46 people in response to a bombing in Istanbul, which Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu on Monday described as a terrorist attack likely carried out by Kurdish militants from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the People's Defense Units (YPG). Turkish officials didn't rule out the Islamic State group.

  • According to Soylu, the suspected bomber is among those arrested following Sunday's blast in the popular Taksim Square area, which killed at least six people and injured 81 others. Vice Pres. Fuat Oktay stated that a female suspect was believed to have carried out the bombing.

The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

Everything points to the latest attack being an act of terrorism by the separatist PKK and its Syrian Kurdish offshoot, the YPG. And while Washington is now shedding tears, it's the US that's supporting the supposed "freedom fighters" of the PKK/YPG in Syria with money and weapons, despite officially classifying the PKK as a terrorist organization. Through its policy of hypocrisy and double standards, the US shares responsibility for the innocent victims of the recent attack.

Pro-establishment narrative

Although no one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, Ankara is already spreading claims that the attack was masterminded by the Syrian PKK/YPG without providing any evidence. At the same time, it's accusing the US of being partly responsible through its alleged support of "terrorists" in Syria. The immediate spread of such theories presumably serves the purpose of justifying a renewed military campaign against US-backed forces in Syria.

Israel Strikes Air Base in Central Syria, Killing 2 Soldiers

The Facts

  • Israeli airstrikes on the Shayrat air base in the central Syrian governorate of Homs killed two Syrian soldiers and wounded three on Sunday, according to the Syrian state news. Several missiles were reportedly intercepted by air defense systems.

  • The attacks took place after Israeli warplanes were seen flying over Lebanon, whose airspace Israeli air forces will pass through to conduct operations in Syria.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Israel has been quite clear that it will not permit Iran to freely move weapons and fighters through Syria if it threatens Israeli security. If endangered, Israel will target Iranian assets in all of the countries into which Iran has dug its tentacles. Iran will continue to see strikes like this one if its aggression continues, as Tehran's behaviors are out of line with the norms of the international community.

Establishment-critical narrative

This is just another example of Israel's constant aggression toward Syria and the resistance as a whole. While the West continually pontificates about Ukrainian sovereignty, it says nothing when Israel violates both Lebanese and Syrian air space on a weekly basis. The US and Israel have no credibility whatsoever.

Day 264 Roundup: Zelenskyy Visits Kherson, Alleges Russian Atrocities Committed in City

The Facts

  • Ukrainian Pres. Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday visited the recently recaptured city of Kherson after Russian troops withdrew from the west bank of the Dnipro River last week. "We are moving forward," he said to troops while also thanking NATO and other allies. "We are ready for peace, peace for all our country," he added.

  • Earlier, in his nightly address on Sunday, Zelenskyy alleged without providing evidence that "investigators have already documented more than 400 Russian war crimes" in the city. "In the Kherson region, the Russian army left behind the same atrocities as in other regions of our country," he said.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Russia's withdrawal from Kherson is a strategic victory for Ukraine. Not only was this the only regional capital captured by Russian forces in its eight-month invasion, it sets the stage for Ukraine's advance into Zaporizhzhia while shattering Russia's hopes of advancing to Mykolaiv and Odesa.

Pro-Russia narrative

Russia's withdrawal from Kherson was the correct decision to take. Its position there was no longer tenable and it was the right move in order to protect the lives of servicemen who were at risk of being cut off.

Nerd narrative

There is a 55% chance that more than 150,000 people will be killed in the Russo-Ukrainian War in 2022, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

G20 Summit: Biden Meets Xi Jinping

The Facts

  • For the first time since taking office, US Pres. Joe Biden met with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping for sideline talks during the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, on Monday.

  • While the pair had met several times before Biden became president, this meeting comes at a time of fraught relations between the countries — namely over China's alleged support of Russia's war in Ukraine, Taiwan, and technology and trade issues.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

While US-China relations are far from mended, this is a first and significant step in the right direction. The meeting was about building a floor with China so that relations can improve and progress on critical issues can be made going forward.

Republican narrative

This meeting was another shameful public appearance by Biden on his latest tour overseas. After apologizing for the US leaving the Paris Agreement under Trump and mistakenly calling Cambodia Colombia, he showed weakness and desperation in his meeting with Xi, failing to hold Beijing accountable for any of its aggression.

Nerd narrative

There is a 19% chance that there will be a US-China war before 2035, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Morgan Stanley: US May Avoid Recession, But Not Europe

The Facts

  • In a report released Sunday, Morgan Stanley predicted that there will be a split in GDP growth between the world's 10 developed countries (G10), with the UK and the Eurozone facing a recession in 2023 and the US narrowly avoiding one.

  • The average G10 growth next year is expected to be 0.3%, with the US seeing a 0.5% increase. China will reportedly outpace the average emerging markets prediction — with 3.7% growth in 2023 — with a GDP increase of 5%.

The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

At this point, the debate over whether the US is officially in a recession doesn't matter. Prices for everyday goods are going up, unemployment is expected to rise above 4% — not including people who've stopped looking for a job — and loan interest rates are still devastatingly high. Average workers are still feeling crushed by this economy and no financial analyst's report can make them feel better. This administration must do more to defeat inflation.

Pro-establishment narrative

The Fed has been tackling inflation, and it has been working. Morgan Stanley isn’t the first to say there’s a lesser chance of a US recession than there was earlier this year, as Goldman Sachs has reduced the probability of a recession to 35%. Economic growth has already occurred and gross domestic product growth looks headed for about 1%.

Three Killed in Univ. of Va. Shooting

The Facts

  • A shooting on the University of Virginia campus late Sunday night has left three people dead and two others injured. The suspect, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., was apprehended Monday. A motive for the attack hasn't yet been provided.

  • Shortly after the shooting, the campus was placed on lockdown, issuing a "RUN HIDE FIGHT" alert.

The Spin

Left narrative

Once again, the utter lack of gun regulation has created a tragedy. No one should have to risk their lives to attend school or stroll around campus, but too many politicians have accepted this as a way of life. Gun violence can be reduced while also maintaining the rights of gun owners, but more must be done to ensure that guns don't fall into the wrong hands.

Right narrative

While tragic, the idea that school shootings are common in America is false. More Americans die from drowning every year than in mass shootings, but you don't hear about that. Politicians on the left focus on school shootings to garner political points. More must be done to address the root causes of the violence — simply curbing the rights of law-abiding gun owners isn't the answer.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that there will be at least 1.38 small firearms per capita in the USA by 2029, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Iran Issues First Death Sentence Tied to Protests

The Facts

  • Iran's Revolutionary Court has issued its first known death sentence for participation in nationwide protests over the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. Sunday's ruling found an unidentified defendant guilty of setting a government building on fire, and sentenced them for "disturbing public order and comfort, community and colluding to commit a crime against national security."

  • Iran's judiciary's website also reported that the accused had been sentenced for "waging war against God and corruption on earth," violating one of Iran's most serious laws.

The Spin

Pro-Iran narrative

These sentences demonstrate that the judiciary is responding to calls from elected officials to end the ongoing insecurity and instability in Iran for reasons of public safety. It's clear that the US is implicated in these protests and the Iranian people are paying the price. Such a forceful response to violent, illegal acts will help secure the situation.

Anti-Iran narrative

Iran is one of the world's leading executioners — it's cementing that reputation with the news that civilians will be sentenced to death for demonstrating against its regime. Authoritarian clerics are threatened by continued protests against the existing patriarchal system and, by resorting to capital punishment, they've shown their fear of the genuine threat the unrest poses to the current draconian system.

Nerd narrative

There is a 50% chance that Iran will cease to be an Islamic Republic by February 2036, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

US Midterms: Mastriano Concedes Defeat in Pa. Gov. Race

Photo: vox

The Facts

  • On Sunday, Pennsylvania Republican state Senator Doug Mastriano, who was endorsed by former Pres. Trump, issued a one-page statement conceding his defeat in the Pennsylvania gubernatorial race to AG Josh Shapiro, five days after the race was called.

  • Mastriano received 2.2M votes of 41.9% to Shapiro’s 3M votes, which equaled 56.3%.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

What a great victory for democracy. First, many of the county’s biggest deniers of the 2020 election were outright rejected by voters in 2022. Second, their conspiracy theories turned out to be nothing more than bluster, as they all eventually conceded traditionally, even if it took Mastriano a few days longer than others.

Republican narrative

Mastriano might’ve been too far right to win a statewide election this time around. However, his campaign highlighted vital questions about the state’s election laws that must be reformed, and the GOP rallied around that issue. While continuing his role as a state Senator, he could help to reform that flawed system.

Ghana: Junior Finance Minister Fired Over Gold Mining Scandal

The Facts

  • Ghanaian Pres. Nana Akufo-Addo's office announced on Monday that Deputy Minister for Finance Charles Adu Boahen was fired after allegations emerged against him in an expose about an illegal gold mining scheme.

  • The decision came after a leaked clip of "Galamsey Economy," a new documentary produced by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and set to be aired on Monday, appeared to show Boahen collecting nearly $200K from investors to give to Ghana's VP Mahamudu Bawumia.

The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

This is further proof of the widespread corruption of the finance ministry — all the way to the top. There has long been an entanglement of politicians and banks, and nothing will ever change unless the entire ministry is dismantled and head minister Ken Ofori-Atta is also fired.

Pro-establishment narrative

Though the severity of these reports came as a surprise to Pres. Akufo-Addo, Ghana's leader has taken decisive action by immediately firing Adu Boahen and calling for an investigation into the matter. He is working to tackle the corruption.
