Australian MP Loses Both Legs From Car Attack
Does political violence demand stronger law and order or restraint from blaming polarization?

The Facts
- Helen Haines, a 65-year-old independent member of Australia's parliament, has had both legs amputated after she was struck by a car in Wangaratta on Monday, her husband, Phil Haines, said Wednesday. Her left leg was removed Monday and her right Wednesday.
- Brendan Nugent, 43, faces charges of dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury and causing harm to a public official, as well as cannabis charges. He did not apply for bail and is due back in court Feb. 4.
- Victoria Police Chief Mike Bush said Wednesday the suspect's motivation is a "centrepiece of the investigation," and officers found no direct past contact between the two. Federal police said the matter appears isolated, with no other known threats.

Respectful disagreement and stronger safeguards for public officials can preserve open democracy without walling lawmakers off from local communities. Civic decency is a democratic necessity.

Due process matters, especially amid unresolved neurological and mental health concerns and a media rush to label extremism. Public safety deserves evidence-based solutions, not right-leaning hyperbole.
