Version 7.18.3
A new four-year term for Lula is a lousy deal for growth, the currency and Brazilian assets. Heavy spending and a debt load already out of hand offer no credible fix under a left agenda shrugging at fiscal limits. Extra political friction after a bitter race only adds risk — this plunge should come as no surprize.
A Lula win puts unchecked Amazon deforestation and easy raids on public wealth at risk. The sell-off prices indicate that the elites are shaken, as they should be. Defending forests and the national purse remains the stronger case, regardless of temporary market discomfort.
The drop in Brazilian assets is a rational reset after a surprise win for Lula, but this isn't a death sentence for the economy. An opposition-controlled Congress can box Lula into pragmatic habits once linked to governability and market trust. This reaction doesn't prove that a Bolsonaro victory would have meant growth.
