Putin Offers to Resume Gas Supplies to Europe

Photo: euro

The Facts

  • Russian Pres. Putin on Wednesday offered to restart gas deliveries to Europe via the undamaged parts of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

  • Speaking at the 5th Russian Energy Week International Forum in Moscow, he said it was now up to the EU to decide whether it wanted supplies to resume. The Russian president called the explosions that led to gas leaks on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines an "act of international terrorism."

The Spin

Anti-Russia narrative

While energy prices are skyrocketing in Europe, Putin's hypocritical offer is the latest proof of how cynically Moscow weaponizes gas exports. But Putin has massively miscalculated, as Moscow is virtually forcing Europe to pursue energy independence, and Russia is already losing market shares to Algeria, Qatar, and Azerbaijan.

Pro-Russia narrative

The fact that Putin's offer to resume gas deliveries is falling on deaf ears shows that Brussels and Berlin are no longer pursuing a rational policy. For EU citizens, this is terrible news ahead of winter, and while the EU is serving US interests, things don't look good for Europe in the long run.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that Russia will produce at least 9.48M barrels of oil per day in 2023, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Day 232 Roundup: Kyiv Region Hit By Drone Strikes; UN General Assembly Votes to Condemn Russian Annexations

The Facts

  • Ukraine's capital, and its surrounding region, were hit by Iranian-made, Shahed-136, kamikaze drones early on Thursday, officials said. Kyrylo Tymoshenko, the deputy head of the Ukrainian presidential office, said "critical infrastructure facilities" were targeted but didn't specify which. There were no reports of civilian casualties at this stage.

  • The attack came shortly after the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly voted to condemn Russia's annexation of four regions of Ukraine on Wednesday, by a margin of 143-5, with 35 abstentions. Russia, Syria, Nicaragua, North Korea, and Belarus voted against, while abstentions came from countries including China, India, Pakistan and South Africa.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Wednesday's UN General Assembly vote issues a clear message to Russia from the rest of the world - Moscow cannot expand its borders by brute force or illegally annex foreign territory through unjustified occupation.

Pro-Russia narrative

Western nations only achieved this anti-Russian resolution by threatening developing countries with all sorts of punishments if they failed to support their aggression. Russia is well aware that other nations are employing diplomatic terror tactics in order to target the Kremlin.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that Putin and Zelenskyy will meet to discuss peace by December 13, 2022, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Pfizer Exec: COVID Vaccines Not Tested on Transmission Before Rollout

The Facts

  • A senior Pfizer executive told a committee of the European Parliament on Monday that its COVID vaccine wasn't tested for preventing transmission of the virus before the company began its global rollout of the vaccine.

  • Janine Small, Pfizer's president of international developed markets, made the admission in response to a question from conservative Dutch MEP Rob Roos.

The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

This admission from Pfizer is scandalous. The company, and countless other officials - including from the Biden administration - claimed vaccines prevented transmission. Biden and others went further by shaming those who didn't get vaccinated, stating they put the wider community at risk. This assertion was not correct and undermined public confidence.

Pro-establishment narrative

Roos's accusations heavily distort the facts. During the very early stages of the pandemic, trials had a primary outcome of reducing the risk of severe disease, not transmission. However, virus transmission was researched later and, as expected, vaccines helped with this too – though it was never promised they would stop it completely. Context is vital here - mRNA vaccines protect people from COVID.

Brain Study: Human Cells Implanted into Rats

The Facts

  • A study published in the journal Nature on Wednesday announced that scientists have successfully transplanted human brain cells into the brains of baby rats to study human brain development and diseases that affect complex human organs.

  • The work will reportedly help further research into mental disorders such as autism and schizophrenia, with scientists confident that they'll be able to grow and alter brain tissue in these "living laboratories" and see how the changes influence the rodents' behavior.

The Spin

Narrative A

This is an important step forward in understanding psychiatric disorders, but the research is a double-edged sword While it paves the way to a new understanding of human brains, it also opens the door to serious ethical questions, such as the creation of an enhanced, "humanized" rat. Scientists need to proceed cautiously.

Narrative B

This cutting-edge research is a goldmine that brings our ability to study human brain development, evolution, and disease to unchartered territory. While it certainly poses ethical questions, particularly surrounding the "humanization" of rats, natural limitations control how deeply human neurons integrate with rats' brains. This is exciting news.

Narrative C

Studies using lab rats are unethical and inhumane. Rats make up around 95% of lab animals, are kept in shoebox-sized cages, and are often terminated via lethal injection, decapitation, or suffocation by carbon dioxide gas after they've served their scientific purpose. It's time to turn to more humane methods, such as Harvard's "organ on a chip."

LA Councilwoman Resigns Over Racist Remarks

The Facts

  • Nury Martinez on Wednesday announced her resignation from the LA City Council following leaked year-old audio in which she can be heard making apparently racist comments while talking with other Latino political leaders.

  • Her decision to step down comes as protesters packed the Council chamber for the second day in a row and politicians, including Pres. Biden, called for her resignation. Earlier this week, Martinez renounced her leadership position and took a leave of absence.

The Spin

Republican narrative

While this scandal has shocked public opinion and provoked national outrage, Nury Martinez and her colleagues represent the true nature of so-called "progressive" politicians. Despite their appealing rhetoric, they are often identity-obsessed racists who simply use Black people to advance their own agenda and win elections.

Democratic narrative

The leaked recording shows that Gen Z and millennial Latinos must become politically active to promote multiracial solidarity. Disputes between groups of color have long been promoted by white supremacy and American political culture on older generations, with Martinez's remarks being a product of US colonialism across Latin America.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that at least 11 percent of black voters will vote for a Republican president in the 2024 US presidential election, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Alex Jones Ordered to Pay $965M to Sandy Hook Families

Photo: AP [via PBS]

The Facts

  • A Connecticut jury decided on Wednesday that Infowars founder Alex Jones should pay $965M to individuals who suffered from his claim that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax.

  • Jones's trial lasted three weeks and included testimony from the parents of victims, school employees, and an FBI agent who responded to the shooting. The case itself was a consolidation of three separate suits.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Not only did Jones flagrantly disrespect the families of the children who died at Sandy Hook, but he also profited from it. After almost ten years, justice has been served, as Jones will likely lose his media empire, which is a dangerous hotbed of conspiracy theories and disinformation. Hopefully, this trial will set a precedent that individuals can't spout vitriolic nonsense that harms victims of tragic events for political and financial gain.

Establishment-critical narrative

This is a sad day for freedom of speech in the US. The American political elite doesn't want the public asking questions, especially regarding things that may counter the dominant narrative around gun control and other civil liberties. Like him or hate him, Jones has a right to freedom of speech and to explore the political class's anti-American narratives.

Nerd narrative

There's a 1% chance that Alex Jones will ever hold high Federal office in the US before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Judge: Trump Must Sit for Deposition in Defamation Suit

Photo: cnn

The Facts

  • On Wednesday, US District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan rejected former Pres. Trump's request for delayed testimony, instead ordering him to answer questions under oath on Oct. 19 in a defamation lawsuit lodged by writer E. Jean Carroll.

  • Carroll, a longtime columnist for Elle magazine, says Trump sexually assaulted her in an upscale Manhattan department store dressing room in the mid-90s. She filed the lawsuit in 2019, saying Trump defamed her with his public denials.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

You can add this case to the long list of legal troubles Trump is currently facing. Unfortunately, it seems that no matter the number, the chances that any of the cases will be successful are slim to none, which will only encourage his followers. The only absolute protection against him is the ballot box, and to hope he doesn't return to a position of power in the future.

Pro-Trump narrative

While these are serious accusations, they are just that allegations. This lawsuit against Trump for defending himself is nothing more than an attempt to grasp at straws after Carroll's failed book that smeared Trump's name and conflicting narratives. It remains to be seen whether these allegations are true — until then, it's innocent until proven guilty.

Nerd narrative

There's an 18% chance that Trump will be jailed or incarcerated before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Syria: Military Bus Blast Kills 18 Soldiers

The Facts

  • At least 18 soldiers were killed and 27 injured on Thursday when an explosive device detonated on a military bus in the Damascus countryside, according to local Syrian media.

  • No group has claimed responsibility for the attack and Syrian authorities haven't directly commented on it as of yet.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

The war in Syria began when the Assad regime brutally cracked down on peaceful protesters calling for freedom and dignity. His country lies in ruin and violence continues - even in Damascus, which was cleared of rebel forces in 2018. Indeed, some analysts are even saying that the opposition may soon see a resurgence.

Establishment-critical narrative

This attack against the government is another terrorist operation by the so-called "opposition." Extremists also attacked Syrian government forces in other parts of the country. Thankfully, the government can manage such attacks and maintain Syria's stability and security - including from the meddling of actors undermining Assad's legitimate government.

Iraqi Parliament Elects Abdul Latif Rashid As New President

The Facts

  • On Thursday, Iraqi lawmakers elected Kurdish politician Abdul Latif Rashid as the country's new president, reportedly garnering more than 160 votes against 99 for the incumbent Barham Salih in a run-off.

  • This comes after three failed attempts to elect a new president – which must be a Kurd according to Iraq's power-sharing political system– earlier this year as the Kurdish Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan couldn't agree on a joint candidate.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

The election of Rashid and his immediate designation of al-Sudani to form a government marks the end of the long-lasting political deadlock in Iraq, which was caused by the Sadrist movement's undemocratic actions. There's still a long way to go, but Iraq is now on the right path to solving its problems.

Establishment-critical narrative

This election might resolve Iraq's political deadlock, but it likely won't be the solution needed to move away from Iraq's defunct political system. Evidence of this is seen in Rashid's first move as president with the immediate appointment of al-Sudani, which will only cause more unrest, and will do little to move away from Iraq's ethno-sectarian power-sharing system.

Jan. 6 Committee Conducts Last Hearing Before Midterms

The Facts

  • After a three-month break, the US House Jan. 6 committee on Thursday met for its last reported hearing before the midterms. Focused primarily on Trump's mindset, the panel covered topics such as Trump's plans to declare victory before all ballots were counted and his alleged acknowledgment of losing despite publicly claiming victory.

  • The committee unveiled an email from the head of Judicial Watch, Tom Fitton, to former Trump assistants urging the former president to declare victory based on the ballots counted on election day while disregarding incoming mail-in ballots. Committee member Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) called it evidence of a "premeditated plan."

The Spin

Democratic narrative

Make no mistake - what's on the ballot in November is democracy itself. The Jan. 6 Committee has issued this dire warning to the American people by taking the extraordinary step of issuing a subpoena to Trump. The Democrats are putting "Stop the Steal" under the most intense limelight it can - in a few weeks voters must cast ballots for legislators, governors, and secretaries of state in one of the most crucial contests in American history.

Pro-Trump narrative

The Democrats know that they are in deep trouble as the midterms approach. Inflation is sky-high, the southern border is out of control, and the Left's Jan. 6 witch hunt is full of fallacies. The thought of subpoenaing Trump is intended to be political theater from the Democrats, but - to their demise - the former President may be delighted to take the mic and speak the truth.

Nerd narrative

There is a 30% chance that any state will refuse to certify its election results during the 2024 US presidential election, according to the Metaculus Prediction community.
