Amazon to Purchase iRobot
Amazon is purchasing iRobot - the maker of Roomba robot vacuum cleaners - in a $1.7B all-cash deal that's expected to increase the company's presence in the home robotics industry.
Following the announcement, iRobot's stock soared more than 19% while Amazon's stock slumped by 1.3%.
This deal marks Amazon's second billion-dollar acquisition in the last two weeks. In late July, the company purchased healthcare provider One Medical for an all-cash deal totaling $3.9B.
Establishment-critical narrative
Consumers should be skeptical of this acquisition as it will only expand Amazon's control over people's private details, such as the layout of users' homes and even their visitors. The tech company is purchasing its way to dominance. Buyers beware.
Pro-establishment narrative
While privacy concerns are understandable, the acquisition won't move forward without regulatory scrutiny, which will give consumers peace of mind. If approved, the deal would mark a turning point in the home robotics industry and reinvent how people clean. This is an exciting announcement.
Actor Kevin Spacey to Pay $31M for Misconduct
A judge on Thursday ruled that actor Kevin Spacey must pay the makers of "House of Cards" nearly $31M for alleged sexual misconduct while filming the popular Netflix series
Spacey - who has denied the allegations - was ordered to pay MRC, the studio behind the show, last year. He appealed the arbitration award, but Thursday's ruling by an LA judge denied his request.
Spacey was found to have violated his contract's demands for professional behavior, and as a result, MRC had to fire him, halt production, and shorten the season, allegedly resulting in tens of millions in losses.
Narrative A
While these allegations are certainly serious, they are also just that allegations. This case highlights how the #Metoo movement can be used as a weapon that sets the dangerous precedent of guilty until proven innocent. Further investigation is needed.
Narrative B
This is a simple case Spacey was found to have breached his contract both by MRC and an independent arbitrator, which cost the studio millions of dollars. It's only fair that he be held accountable and pay back the monetary damages.
Gaza: UN Security Council Holds Emergency Meeting
The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on Mon. to discuss the ceasefire in Gaza, with several members raising concerns regarding the likelihood of renewed fighting. The Israeli ambassador blamed Palestinian Islamic Jihad for the confrontation, while the Palestinian ambassador pointed to the destruction the fighting caused.
A ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants has held since Sun., following three days of violent clashes. It was mediated by Egypt to stop the most intense outbreak of fighting in Gaza since an 11-day conflict in May 2021.
At least 44 people have died in the latest violence. It began with Israeli attacks on sites in the Gaza Strip, which its military said were in response to threats from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) militant group.
Pro-Israel narrative
Operation Breaking Dawn was designed to neutralize concrete threats to Israel and civilians. Israeli forces took the initiative to prevent attacks planned by terrorists who rule the Gaza Strip with an iron fist. The IDF has proved once again the country's commitment to combat terrorist organizations.
Pro-Palestine narrative
This latest attack on Gaza is just another example of the West's double standards. Israel struck Gaza without any provocation, and yet it has the nerve to label Palestinians who resist as terrorists. As the world watches Ukrainians fight a brutal Russian occupation, no one seems to care when Israel brutally attacks Gaza, which has been under siege for over 15 years.
Nerd narrative
There's a 5% chance that Israel and Palestine will hold peace talks in 2022, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Day 166 Roundup: Any Attack on Nuclear Plant 'Suicidal,' UN Head Warns; Ukraine Strikes Bridges in Occupied Kherson
After Russia and Ukraine traded blame for a weekend rocket attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant – controlled by Russian forces since Mar. – the UN's Sec. General António Guterres condemned the attack and reiterated calls to give officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) access to the plant. The official did not apportion any blame for the strike.
Speaking in Tokyo on Mon. following a visit to Hiroshima to mark the 77th anniversary of the world's first nuclear bomb attack, Guterres said: "Any attack to a nuclear plant is a suicidal thing. I hope that those attacks will end, and at the same time I hope that the IAEA will be able to access the plant."
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces reportedly struck two Russian-controlled bridges in the occupied southern region of Kherson. Russian media confirmed one of the attacks on Antonovskiy Bridge, reporting that construction equipment was damaged and that its reopening following a previous attack has been delayed. The Russian military have reportedly set up a ferry crossing while the bridge was being repaired.
Anti-Russia narrative
This invasion is an egregious violation of international law. Putin's ultimate aim is to restore the Soviet empire, even if it takes massive bloodshed and false pretexts such as calling the 2014 Ukrainian revolution after an election a "coup". This unprovoked attack is the latest chapter in Putin's Orwellian attempt to rewrite history.
Pro-Russia narrative
NATO and the US have ignored Russia's security concerns by breaking its promise not to expand eastward in return for German reunification. These concerns are legitimate and taking them seriously would have avoided the Ukraine tragedy.
Nerd narrative
There is a 6% chance that there will be a serious radiation incident at any nuclear plant in Ukraine by 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Biden Signs Climate, Tax Bill
Biden on Tues. signed the projected $739B Inflation Reduction Act, which includes tax, health, and energy provisions - the biggest legislative step yet toward his promise to wean the US off of fossil fuels.
Biden has praised the $369B climate aspects of the bill, including incentives to switch to clean energy-driven vehicles and home appliances, predicting it could save consumers hundreds of dollars per year.
Estimates say the bill will cut carbon emissions by 40% by 2030. Tax credits of $4k and $7.5k are included for the purchases of electric vehicles, excluding vehicles with battery materials processed in China.
Democratic narrative
After decades of failed attempts in the Senate, Democrats have successfully passed landmark legislation to address the climate emergency, increase competitiveness with China, reduce the deficit, and protect vulnerable Americans from corporate extortion by Big Pharma. The Inflation Reduction Act is Biden's greatest political achievement to date.
Republican narrative
This legislation is going to make the US worse off, not better. Increasing taxes and the power of the IRS will cost ordinary Americans dearly. The bill will only exacerbate a looming inflation crisis, and further regulating the healthcare industry will undermine the competitiveness of the pharmaceutical market. The GOP was right to unify in opposition.
Nerd narrative
There is a 50% chance that US inflation will be at least 6.83% in 2022, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Blinken Continues Africa Tour in DRC
On the second leg of his three-country tour of Africa, US Sec. of State Antony Blinken arrived on Tues. in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where he met with Pres. Felix Tshisekedi, other government officials, and civil society groups.
The conflict in eastern Congo and tensions between the DRC and Rwanda reportedly topped Blinken's agenda during his two-day visit, amid rising geopolitical tensions over Africa and US concerns about Russian and Chinese access to the DRC's rare earth minerals.
Following the release of a UN report accusing Kigali of supporting the M23 rebels and intervening militarily in eastern DRC, Blinken expressed concern about the "credible reports." While Kinshasa has long accused Rwanda of supporting the rebel group, Kigali rejects the accusations.
Pro-establishment narrative
Initiatives such as the planned US-Africa summit in December and Blinken's Africa trip are prudent and timely steps by the Biden administration. If Washington is careful to treat African countries with mutual respect and not as potential venues for proxy competition against powers like Russia and China in a new "cold war" the US will be doing a great service to the rules-based global order.
Establishment-critical narrative
Africa is entering a new phase of great power competition for the continent. But African states are no longer willing to be seen as instruments by Washington in pursuit of its geopolitical goals against Russia and China under the guise of a "rules-based order." African states are well advised to pursue an independent foreign policy that is not dictated by the West.
China Announces New Military Drills Near Taiwan
On Mon., Beijing announced a new round of military drills around Taiwan. This comes a day after the scheduled end of its largest-ever war games, carried out for 72 hrs in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island.
Without identifying the exact location, China's Eastern Theater Command has resumed anti-submarine and sea assault drills in the seas and airspace near Taiwan. Exercises are also being carried out in the South China Sea and the Yellow Sea.
Taiwan claimed to have detected 39 aircraft and 13 ships from China in the Strait on Mon., including 21 planes crossing the "median line" – an unofficial border not recognized by Beijing.
Pro-China narrative
China's drills around Taiwan are necessary to both prepare the Chinese military for a possible military engagement initiated by the US and push forward the reunification process. China has every right to assert itself over its own sovereign territory, and the US is playing with fire by flagrantly disregarding its previous historic agreements with China.
Anti-China narrative
China is clearly overreacting to Pelosi's visit. US support for Taiwan has been a cornerstone of US policy in Asia for over 70 years, and it's China who is being provocative by launching its largest ever military drills near the island. The PRC's loud saber rattling is menacingly close to Taiwan, which marks a dangerous escalation.
Nerd narrative
There is a 25% chance that China will launch a full-scale invasion of Taiwan before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Amnesty Regrets ‘Distress’ Caused by Report Rebuking Ukraine
On Sun., Amnesty International apologized for the "distress and anger" caused by its report on Ukrainian military's fighting tactics, accusing Ukraine of endangering civilians. The report was denounced by Pres. Volodymyr Zelenskyy and triggered the head of Amnesty International's Kyiv office to resign in protest.
Amnesty's report, issued on Aug. 4, accused Ukrainian forces of exposing civilians to danger and violating the norms of international humanitarian law by establishing bases in schools and hospitals and launching counterattacks from heavily populated areas.
Amnesty said it found military activity or bases at 22 of the 29 schools it visited in the Donbas and Mykolaiv regions. It reported that at least five hospitals were being used as de facto military bases.
Pro-establishment narrative
Amnesty is shamelessly shredding its credibility by serving as a megaphone for the propaganda of the Putin regime. It also fails to grasp the basic realities of the war Ukrainian forces only base themselves in civilian areas because Russian forces are attacking them in the first place.
Establishment-critical narrative
Amnesty is right to stand by its findings. Putting civilians in harm's way by placing bases or weapons systems in residential areas is a clear violation of international law and it should be condemned when it goes on.
Report: UK's Met Police Strip-Searched 650 Kids in Two Years
Up to 650 children were strip-searched between 2018 and 2020 by Britain's Metropolitan Police, according to data from the Children's Commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza.
Black children were massively and disproportionately overrepresented in the statistics. While just 19% of 10-17-year-olds in London are Black, 58% of those searched fit this category. More than half of the overall group searched were Black boys.
In 23% of cases, an appropriate adult was not present, said the report published on Mon., which also noted that the majority of those searched were found innocent of their suspected crimes.
Left narrative
This report is a shocking indictment of the systemic racism that led to the abuse of Child Q. Children continue to be affected by racism at all levels of society and in all institutions. The Home Office and police leaders must take action and review statutory guidance and training to protect vulnerable young people from being unscrupulously and systematically targeted by authorities.
Right narrative
Even the findings of this report do not conclusively show that the Met has an issue with racism, though they certainly have a problem with people who perceive racism in the force. The greater concern raised by recent revelations is that the police have a public relations problem that will obstruct their ability to "police by consent" - this is what must be addressed.
GOP Rep. Who Voted to Impeach Trump Advances in Wash. Primary
Incumbent Republican Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.) has won his primary in the state's 4th Congressional District, where he will face Democrat Doug White in the general election.
Newhouse, 66, one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach former Pres. Trump following the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, beat six other Republicans.
After the impeachment vote, six Republican leaders in his district demanded his resignation, but he resisted by claiming he was upholding his oath to the Constitution and ended up winning half the counties that voted for his resignation.
Democratic narrative
Newhouse's victory is a solid mark in the loss column for Trump. Even if Newhouse ultimately loses to his Democrat opponent, this is still a good sign for the left, as it shows Trump's influence on the GOP may have diminished. This vote shows that Trump is not necessarily the sole kingmaker of the GOP.
Pro-Trump narrative
In a race that tested the political fortunes of those who voted to impeach Trump, Newhouse has just barely survived. Despite his win, Newhouse's victory is a rare sight for those who chose impeachment, with Trump's robust influence still strong in the GOP.
Nerd narrative
There's a 60% chance that the Republican party will control both the House and the Senate after the 2022 midterm elections, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Police, FBI Probe Murders of Muslim Men in New Mexico
Albuquerque, N.M. police have arrested Muhammad Syed, a 51-year-old originally from Afghanistan, and charged him with two of this summer's murders of Muslim men in the city. Police said he is also a suspect in two other murders of Muslim men that have taken place in the past 10 months.
Police said Syed, a Sunni Muslim, was arrested at a traffic stop after a tip from the city's Muslim community pointed them in his direction. All four victims were Shiite Muslims.
The murders have not yet been classified as serial killings or hate crimes, but investigators are still looking into Syed's alleged motive.
Left narrative
Although these horrific killings have rattled the Muslim community, law enforcement has taken swift action to get to the bottom of its investigation, and members of the community – both Sunni and Shiite – came together to support each other. It's a tremendous relief to have some clarity in this disturbing case.
Right narrative
The mainstream media and some left-leaning activist groups jumped to conclusions about these being racially-motivated murders. There was no information at the time on a suspect nor a motive. Such rash speculation was highly irresponsible, especially given these new developments.
